Er erinnert an das erste Erntedankfest der Pilgrim Fathers, als diese im Jahre 1621 ihre erste erfolgreiche Ernte auf amerikanischem Boden feierten. Deshalb darf bei keinem traditionellen Thanksgiving-Festessen der Truthahnbraten und der Kürbiskuchen fehlen. Bei einem solchen Essen versammelt sich häufig die gesamte Familie, wofür auch lange Anreisen in Kauf genommen werden. Er wird am vierten Donnerstag im November gefeiert. Der erste Thanksgiving Day wurde 1621 von den Pilgrims - Pilger in Plymouth Colony zum Dank an Gott für Beistand und Hilfe in schweren Zeiten gefeiert. Traditionell trifft man sich mit der Familie zu einem Festessen mit stuffed turkey - gefüllter Truthahn, cranberry sauce - Cranberrysoße, yams - Süßkartoffeln und corn - Mais. -
